Perpetual futures funding: how does it affect P&L?

Funding is a cash flow associated with holding perpetual contracts. It can be paid or received and changes the position’s economic result. It is separate from execution fees and price gains. Availability depends on the connector.

  5. Frequently asked questions

Use actual payments

An announced funding rate is not a completed payment. Use the amount, currency and timestamp recorded by the platform. Frequency and calculation methods vary by market.

Check the sign convention

A positive number in one API may represent a charge in another. Compare an identifiable payment with the statement before adding a full series. Payments reduce net results; receipts increase them.

Identify missing funding

Not every Fillnovo connector reads funding. The import catalogue documents each platform’s limits. If executions match but totals differ, compare funding payments for the same period and currency.

Avoid counting twice

A statement may already show results net of funding. Adding the same flow again produces an incorrect result. Document each file column’s meaning before reconciling totals.

Verification example

Perpetual futures funding: how does it affect P&L? · Illustrative example
ComponentAmount
Gross result+40 USDT
Fees−4 USDT
Funding received+3 USDT
Complete net result+39 USDT

40 − 4 + 3 = 39 USDT. With 3 USDT of funding paid instead, the result would be 33 USDT.

Frequently asked questions

Does missing funding mean the executions are wrong?

Not necessarily. Executions can be accurate while the net economic result remains incomplete.
